Prayer: Prayer Group
built 209 days ago
Prayer services, prayer vigils, and candlelight vigils reigned for several days. The Upper East Side's Von Steuben parade and other fairs, as well as a public college's graduation ceremonies, were canceled and replaced by prayer services. Many churches, including those of fringe sects such as Christian Science, hope to bring in new faces by advertising free support and counseling. Some Jewish groups have promoted their emergency charity efforts in the context of the High Holy Days (the ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur) A New York Times article did concede that "humanists, atheists, and agnostics" ... mourned, but to illustrate that, it quoted a Humanistic Judaism rabbi.

Prayer, in religion, both a person's act of communion with God, or any other object of worship, and the words used. It is the natural result of a person's belief in God. Prayer may be individual or group, formal or spontaneous, silent or spoken. In one or more forms, it is at the center of worship. The inseparable accompaniment of sacrifice in most primitive religions, prayer occupied a central position in Jewish religion from earliest days. The Temple was "a house of prayer" (see Isaiah 56:7) and the Psalms, or Psalter, became the prayer of liturgy of the Temple and the synagogue and formed the substance of prayers in early Christianity.

As other Americans learned of this call and of Room 219, they began to join the House Members in prayer. Across the country, churches, families, and communities united with their leaders to form local 219 Groups. Individuals made personal commitments to pray for designated five-minute increments serving as the foundational spiritual blocks to ensure around-the-clock prayer for the nation. As the number of those praying grew, these spiritual blocks began to form a powerful wall of prayer around America.

Whoever catches a rak'ah of prayer before its time has expired has caught the entire prayer in its time. Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, said, "Whoever catches one rak'ah of the prayer has caught the prayer." (Related by "the group.") This refers to any of the prayers. Al-Bukhari has recorded, "Whoever of you catches one prostration of the afternoon prayer before the sun has set should complete his prayer. If one of you catches one prostration of the morning prayer before the sun has risen, he should complete his prayer." Here the meaning of prostration is rak'ah.

Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma, who has been leading a campaign to have sectarian prayers during chamber business, apologized to Jewish leaders for asking -- during a discussion of the prayer issue -- how much of the state's population Jews represented. Bosma reminded them that Christians comprised at least 80% of the population. Bosma subsequently apologized, but not before remarking: "I asked the group what percentage of the population in Indiana for demographic purposes was of Jewish tradition and faith and it was them who provided me with the two percent." PrayWay was founded in 2004 to serve the universal body of Christ as an online venue for prayer requests to be received, and for Christians to minister to others through interactive prayer. Prayer forums, such as this one, function much the way a prayer group or “prayer circle” would work in a live setting. An advantage of online prayer forums is that they can occur a global level with fewer restrictions to the size of the group, time of meeting, or other limiting factors.
