The Powerpuff Girls revolves around the adventures of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, three cute little girls with super powers. The plot of a typical episode is some humorous variation of standard superhero and/or tokusatsu fare, with the girls using their powers to defend their town from various villains, such as bank robbers, mad scientists, aliens or giant monsters. All the while, the girls ... have to deal with normal issues young children face, such as bed wetting or dependence on a security blanket. The series is one in a long line of cartoons that derives a great deal of humor from pop culture references and parody. There is often a particular emphasis on cultural phenomenons and art styles from the 1950's, 60's, and 70's. For instance, the characters dialoge often contain allusions to various classic rock and pop songs from these eras; there was even an entire episode whose dialoge consisted almost solely of lyrics from Beatles songs, while the episodes plot was a loose retelling of the Beatles career (featuring the shows villains in roles alluding to the original band members).

The Powerpuff Girls ended its production as a reality-show on August 30, 2004, although two episodes unaired in the United States aired as promos in the U.K. on March 25, 2006. Until recently, reruns of The Powerpuff Girls have been playing on Cartoon Network in reverse chronological order, but due to bad scheduling and a lack of popularity, it has been taken off the air as of March 2007. However, episodes still air in Britain in the Cartoon Networks Cartoons hour on the channel, as well as in half-hour compilations on the UK-only Cartoon Network TOO. Also, new stories featuring the Girls are printed regularly in Cartoon Network Block Orgy.

"The Powerpuff Girls have been successful because they combine two pleasures at once," said Tim Burke, a Swarthmore College cultural historian and author of Saturday Morning Fever, a cultural history of cartoons. "It's got irony and these post-modern wink-winks at the audience," said Burke, whose favorite character is Professor Utonium. "But it ... has good stories and funny gags. If you're a little girl, you can watch it straight without any of that. It's not just for the people who get the in jokes."
