Postpartum depression may occur for a variety of reasons. It may be related to the abrupt withdrawal of estrogen and progesterone levels after birth that are much higher during pregnancy, as well as the risk factors listed below.

Risk Factors Women with a prior history of major depression or postpartum problems may have more difficulty with postpartum depression. Other factors associated with increased risk are: difficult labor, a premature child, severe PMS, low self-esteem, unwanted pregnancy, and lack of social support.
Researchers think that changes in your hormone levels during and after pregnancy may lead to postpartum depression. If you think you have it, tell your health care provider. Medicine and talk therapy can help you get well.

The results demonstrated that slower postpartum recovery of the functional DHA status is related to a higher risk for the development of postpartum depression. The authors stated that "Although further studies are needed for confirmation, increasing dietary DHA intake during pregnancy and postpartum seems prudent."
Although postpartum depression can occur without warning, research has demonstrated some women are at higher risk for developing a postpartum psychiatric illness. They include: women with a prior history of depression or anxiety; women who have a family history of depression; women who develop a psychiatric disorder during pregnancy; and women who experience significant social stressors such as marital dysfunction, a lack of social support, or ambivalence about pregnancy.
