The Portland Trail Blazers, commonly known as the Blazers, are a professional basketball team based in Portland, Oregon. They play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The franchise, based in Portland throughout its existence, entered the league in 1970, and is currently the only major league franchise in the state of Oregon. From 1977 through 1995, the team sold out 814 consecutive home games, the longest such streak in American professional sports.[1] They originally played their home games in the Memorial Coliseum, before moving to the Rose Garden Arena in 1995.

The Portland Trail Blazers joined the NBA during a league expansion that ... included the Buffalo Braves and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The original Portland club featured guard Geoff Petrie and forward LeRoy Ellis; it registered a win-loss record of 29-53. Portland had several talented rookies, and Petrie shared the NBA rookie of the year award with Dave Cowens of the Portland Trail Blazers. Blazers forward Sidney Wicks won the award the following year. After their debut campaign, Portland placed near the bottom of the league during their next three seasons. A 27-55 win-loss record in 1973-74 earned the Blazers the number-one selection in the 1974 NBA draft, which the team used to pick Bill Walton, a three-time college player of the year while at UCLA.

The Portland Trail Blazers' new star guard was cited by a Clackamas County Sheriff's officer Oct. 30 for possession of marijuana. He faces a minimum $500 fine in a Nov. 18 court appearance, according to "Blazers' Rider denies violation" in the Nov. 1, 1996 Oregonian (pp. A1 & A9). Rider denied possessing the pot, though police reported smelling burning pot emanating from the four-passenger vehicle and confiscated a pipe. Rider was previously arrested for possession by the California Highway Patrol on June 27, according to the same Oregonian report. The Trail Blazers neither benched nor penalized Rider.

The nickname of Portland Trail Blazers, submitted by 172 contestants, was selected by the committee as the most suitable for the club. The new name was announced at the Seattle-New York game in Portland in 1970.
