Despite a sudden and unexpected downturn in Chinese car sales, Western auto and partsmakers remain determined to invest in the populous Asian nation. "We're in it for the long-term," General Motors CFO John Devine told TheCarConnection, and will continue with the $3 billion expansion announced in June. That confirmation came despite the fact that Chinese car sales were nearly flat last month, and have been steadily declining from a growth rate that has topped 100 percentin recent years. Meanwhile, the Detroit-based supplier, Metaldyne, will ... proceed with plans to set up as many as five joint ventures and wholly-owned operations in China over the next five years. "It's still the hottest market in the world," explained Senior Vice President E. Scott Ferriman, adding his belief that the slowdown is a temporary one resulting from a Chinese government effort to cool down an overheated economy. Like other companies investing in China, Metaldyne has had problems protecting itself from the theft of its intellectual property.

Graphically, Populous: The Beginning is quite impressive. The artists have given buildings a primitive, thatched-hut-like appearance. Each mission is set on a different, small world, and the engine accurately represents the fact that you are on a globe, with curved surfaces and an effective horizon. Control is somewhat similar to Bungie's Myth: The Fallen Lords, and you can rotate and zoom the map at will (even zooming all the way out to view the world as a globe, with buildings and units appearing as small icons). The sound is good, from the cartoonish battle sounds to the strange language your minions speak.

In POPULOUS, you are a God and the ground rumbles at your touch. You must provide fertile land for your followers in order to multiply and to grow in strength. Ultimately, you want the entire world to worship you. While you work, evil runs throughout the land. Make sure your followers mature and are able to face evil, or your destiny will be bleak in POPULOUS.

Fans and journalists around the world have been asking EA Japan lead designer Takahiro Murakami about a Populous remake ever since he worked on SimCity DS. Both games are from the same era and were very popular, so it would seem a natural progression. He ... enjoyed them both while growing up, so -- as he tells it -- it was exciting for him to finally answer "yes" Wednesday night at an EA pre-Tokyo Game Show press event.
