Popular Music is a celebration of blokeish-ness, Swedish-style. The small town of Pajala in the north of Sweden was, in the 1960s, barely part of the civilised world. Guys passed the time in moonshine-fueled acts of endurance involving farting, belching, fighting, blowing things up, sweaty sexual encounters and marathon sauna competitions. People were just beginning to enjoy the benefits of a booming economy as Pajala entered the modern age. The dirt roads were getting tarsealed, there were cars, bigger houses, new clothes, and music.

Popular Music and Music Videos is part of a three-lesson unit designed to introduce students to the concept of popular culture and the role that it plays in their lives. In this lesson, students examine the importance of videos to the music industry and the role that music plays in popular culture. In pairs, students interview each other about their musical preferences. This information is then tallied as a class. Activities for this lesson include: viewing and listening to videos, with and without sound, in order to analyze aesthetic visual elements; exploring the history of the music video; and independent projects on music videos for selected musical genres.

Students in the MA program in Popular Music and Culture may apply for conference funding to cover registration, travel, accommodation and other related expenses. To be eligible, a student normally must be presenting a paper at a recognized scholarly peer-reviewed conference and must have an academic average of 80% or higher. Popular Music and Culture students who meet the criteria may be eligible to receive up to $300 per presentation.
