Just a 15 minute cab ride from the center of Puebla is the town of Cholula. The original inhabitants of Cholula did not fare well under the Spanish; they supported their Aztec allies and ambushed Cortez on his march west towards Tenochtitlan (Modern-day Mexico City). The ambush failed and the leaders were executed; their temples and cities destroyed and replaced by Spanish churches. Everywhere you go in Cholula today, there seems to be a church. The largest pyramid in Mexico is here: although its top was leveled and a church built on it, too. The archaeological park is open to the public, and on a clear day, offers good views of the volcano.
