Explain to students that they are to research the Great Schism and compile reasons that the Pope that they represent is the true and all powering Pope of the Catholic Church. They will ... need to research reasons why the other two elected Popes should not have authority over the Roman Catholic Church.
Pope offers hope to world’s youth…When the pope arrives in Toronto July 23 for World Youth Day, thousands of young people will be waiting for the chance to be in his presence. SFU humanities lecturer Donald Grayston says that’s what the event is about. "It’s a chance to say they saw him, heard him, and for many there will be a sense of personal connection." Grayston notes that the visit comes in the wake of a rise in youth involvement in organized religion. He says that as a religious institution, Christianity has had time to reflect on how to be present among its youth, and given more anxious times, young people are exploring their spirituality. "There is a sense that through organized religion, there may be solace, a solution to their need for personal peace," says Grayston, who can talk about the relevance of religion and spirituality to young people. Meanwhile, SFU historian Hilmar Pabel, who specializes in Catholicism, says despite the pope’s frailty, he continues to draw great enthusiasm and enjoy celebrity status, as he witnessed at the Vatican on Palm Sunday when the pope announced his visit to World Youth Day.

[W]hen the Pope reached northern Italy the promised escort had not arrived, and he took refuge in the castle of his friend Countess Matilda at Canossa. Here the famous confrontation between pope and king took place. The King, abandoned by his nobles and bishops, decided to approach the Pope as a penitent and ask forgiveness. In January 1077, in the dead of winter, he crossed the Alps and after reaching the courtyard of the castle where the Pope was staying, the King stood barefoot in the snow for three days waiting for Gregory to respond.

According to Vatican sources, the present Pope is far more engaged in the green debate than John Paul. In the past year Benedict has spoken strongly on the need to preserve rainforests. In the next few weeks he visits Brazil.
That new pope will receive the allegiance of all the cardinals present, after which he will proceed to the papal apartments to be vested with the white robes of his office. The Cardinal Camerlengo and several other cardinals then conduct the new pope to the balcony above St. Peter's Square. The Camerlengo will announce the election with the Latin formula Nuntio vobis gaudium magnum: Habemus papam! ("I announce to you all a great joy: We have a pope!"), and then names him and announces the name by which he has chosen to be known as pope. The new pope then comes out to offer his first blessing urbi et orbi, to the city and to the world.

Subscribe to the magazine FIRST THINGS today Once Henry was granted absolution, he returned to Germany as king, legitimated by the Pope. In the meantime... Henry’s enemies had elected a new king and presented the Pope with a dilemma. Whom should he recognize? Unfortunately, Gregory chose the new king, Rudolph; he even imprudently predicted Henry’s imminent death. Henry, however, remained robustly healthy, while Rudolph died in battle. This was a costly misstep and an ominous portent.
