Popcap Games: Companies
built 661 days ago
The company expanded in 2005 with the acquisition of Sprout Games, a Seattle-based casual games developer company like PopCap Games, founded by James Gwertzman. Sprout Games is the creator of the game Feeding Frenzy. The Sprout team subsequently moved to Seattle and helped PopCap to make a sequel to the hit game, Feeding Frenzy 2, with Gwertzman becoming the Director of Business Development at Popcap.
Like PopCap, the Vancouver-based SpinTop develops and publishes casual, family-friendly games, and offers free demo versions of their games. The company will operate as an independent subsidiary of PopCap, with SpinTop Co-Founders Duncan Magee and Craig Hamilton continuing to oversee operations. Future SpinTop releases will be published by PopCap.
Mobile game publisher Glu Mobile is sticking with PopCap Games, the two companies announced today. Under the this new multi-year partnership Glu will continue to publish three of PopCap’s most popular titles including Zuma, AstroPop and Insaniquarium for new mobile handsets, and carriers throughout the world.
PopCap encourages independent game developers including handing out your own developer framework to others. How do you see independent game developers fitting into the gaming market? It seems that all big companies started out as small independent companies with a dream.

PopCap adapted to uncertain times by experimenting with direct game downloads from its website. The gamble paid off, and within a couple of years, the company moved to a real office in Seattle.
