Pop Art: Works
built 630 days ago
In addition to appropriating the subject-matter of mass culture, Pop Art appropriated the techniques of mass production. Rauschenberg and Johns had already abandoned individual, titled paintings in favour of large series of works, all depicting the same objects. In the early 1960s the American Andy Warhol carried the idea a step further by adopting the mass-production technique of silk-screen printing, turning out hundreds of identical prints of Coca-Cola bottles, Campbell's soup cans, and other familiar subjects, including identical three-dimensional Brillo boxes.
Bowie took him to Berlin where he produced two Iggy Pop albums, Lust for Life and The Idiot. There were two classic pop singles too, The Passenger and Real Wild Child. Bowie collaborated on the 1986 Blah Blah Blah album and his own work, Jean Genie, was said to have been written about Iggy Pop. The advent of Grunge saw Iggy Pop's stock rise. The soundtrack from the film Trainspotting exposed him to a new generation. Songs like The Passenger then received wide publicity through TV commercials. Covers of his songs became widespread including by Bowie himself.

Kathleen Karlsen - EzineArticles Expert Author The theme of technology and the machine ... played a part in pop art, especially in the work of Andy Worhol (1928-1987). Worhol's Campbell's Soup Cans and his Marilyn Monroe Diptych, both of 1962, mimicked the advertising industry and the repetitious printing of tireless machines. Worhol claimed pointedly that he wanted "to be a machine" and his gimmicky wit was big business for a short while.
