Life onboard the Windjammer Polynesia ship is quite unlike what passengers might experience onboard any other cruise ship. The Windjammer S.V. Polynesia is small in scale, allowing for constant interaction between the crew and the passengers and creating a casual atmosphere where friendships are readily forged. The deck is the hub of social activity and shipmates gather there to chat, drink, and take in the sun.
Magic in Polynesia used to be the preserve of the priestly and upper classes, although lesser sorcery was practiced by individuals not of these castes. There was a prevailing belief in what was known as mana, or supernatural power in certain individuals. The method of using this power was twofold. One of these was practiced by a society known as the Iniat, where certain rites were carried out that were supposed to bring calamity upon the enemies of the tribe.

Between 1946 and 2003, French Polynesia had the status of an overseas territory (French: territoire d'outre-mer, or TOM). In 2003 it became an overseas collectivity (French: collectivité d'outre-mer, or COM). Its statutory law of 27 February 2004 gives it the particular designation of overseas province (French: province d'outre-mer, or POM), but without legal modification of its status.
French Polynesia has a very remote position in the South Pacific Ocean, so unless you are already there, flying is the only option. There are cruiseships and cargo ships travelling from Hawaii or New Zealand but none on a regular schedule.

Much of the biota of the Polynesia-Micronesia Hotspot remains unknown, and there is an urgent need for a comprehensive biological survey to guide and inform the development of conservation priorities. Even in Hawaii, which is the best-known archipelago in the hotspot, more than a third of the biota – at least 7 000 species – have not yet been scientifically named (Allison 2003). Bishop Museum and a host of partners, especially the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), are addressing this issue in Hawaii through the Hawaii Biological Survey, and are working with the Pacific Science Association and governments and NGOs throughout the region to develop a Pacific Biological Survey. The Pacific Science Association is ... working with the USGS, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), SPREP, and others to develop a Pacific Basin Information Facility (PBIF) to facilitate Web access to a wide array of currently inaccessible biodiversity information.
