Students are supposed to write a college level, analytical paper on the politics of China, Japan and South Korea. This is maximum 7-8 page paper (word processed and double spaced), excluding the bibliography and citations. The paper should have proper citations and bibliography. For topics and ideas for the paper, students are encouraged to talk to the instructor beforehand. On March 2, a one-page topic proposal is due. The final draft of the paper is due on April 27.

Honors Program The Honors Program of the Department of Politics is for students with a deep and abiding interest in the study of politics. Students apply for the program during in February of their second year. Successful applicants usually maintain a 3.700 GPA or above and have a record of sustained interest and promise in political studies. Students enter the program at the start of their third year and begin a special, ungraded curriculum that integrates small seminars in different fields of political analysis with a limited number of courses taken outside the department. Honors students explore their special interests by working with a faculty member on a one-to-one basis in writing an honors thesis. The John White Stevenson Prize is awarded annually to the best honors thesis.

Politics majors are required to take Politics 495 in fulfillment of their senior comprehensive obligation. They, therefore, should have met, or be in the process of meeting, all requirements for the major. The Seminar meets in the spring semester, but students will be expected to submit proposals for their research papers in the fall semester prior to the actual meeting of the Seminar. The Seminar itself will engage all students in an analytical review of a wide range of materials from various aspects of the discipline and will require that students write a major research paper in one particular sub-discipline of the field. Students qualifying for College Honors will be given an opportunity to write research papers that will be evaluated by the department for honors.

Anne Thurston, a senior research professor at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C., and author of numerous books on Chinese contemporary politics, will deliver a keynote address titled “Rising China? The Other China? Thoughts from China’s Grassroots.” Her talk, which will detail the country’s social realities that she feels are commonly misunderstood by Washington policymakers, will take place at 4 p.m. April 19 in the Browning Cinema of the DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts.

The Department of Politics offers a Master of Arts program for part-time or full-time students. Full-time students will be expected to complete the course work in one year, and may take up to another year to complete a master's project. Part-time students, with the approval of the department, may take up to four years to complete the required courses and a master's project. Students desiring to continue their studies toward the PhD must apply for admission to that program.
