The Korean peninsula has had geographic importance for politics in Northeast Asia for thousands of years. Because of Korea's location between Japan and China, its domestic politics and international politics have been thoroughly intertwined. This course will present an analytic overview of the politics of both North and South Korea. Topics to be covered include the historical development of Korean politics, domestic politics in South Korea since 1948, North Korean politics and nuclear threat, and the foreign relations of and between North and South Korea. Prerequisite: Government 4, or permission of the instructor. Dist: SOC or INT; WCult: NW.

This is a well-rounded introduction of contemporary Chinese Politics. The book covers many asepcts of Chinese government and public policy like the structure of the government, political participation, civils society, foreign policy, social policy and a brief discussion of the economic system in China.

Candidates will be required to show knowledge of the politics of the countries of sub-Saharan Africa with respect to their political institutions, political sociology, and political economy. The following topics may be considered: nationalism; forms of government, civilian and military; parties and elections; conditions for democracy; class, ethnicity, religion, and gender; business, labour, and peasantries; structural adjustment and agricultural policies; the influence of external agencies.
