Politics of Canada: United States
built 197 days ago
To understand the genesis of Canada's policy of multiculturalism, one need appreciate that for the entirety of its relatively brief history, the politics of Canada has been marked by often-acrimonious conflict between the nation's English and French populations. Ultimately, it is the ardent desire of Quebecois to maintain their distinct cultural identity, and the reluctance of the nation's Anglophone elite to engage in cultural jingoism for fear of endangering national unity, that precludes the development of a meaningful and common identity for the nation. Whatever patriotism exists in Canada, it is founded largely on the mutual celebration by the two 'founding peoples' of what Canada is not, and does not stand for. Thus, when prompted, Canadians tend to define their nation relative to the cultural values of the United States, which are almost universally proclaimed to be anathema.

Courses are offered in the traditional fields of international and comparative politics, American government, political theory, public policy and public law. The department ... offers classes in environmental policy and politics, Native American studies, the politics of science and women’s studies. In addition to course offerings and faculty expertise, the department presents real world opportunities for political science students to apply their learning. Those include numerous internship and scholarship opportunities in Alaska and the rest of the United States. Students can participate in model United Nations simulations, join the political science honor society Pi Sigma Alpha, aid faculty as research assistants and take part in numerous other department projects such as bringing speakers to campus or hosting roundtables on important issues. Graduate students may also serve as teaching assistants.

Harpers autarchic politics since gaining office reflect the politics of the crisis of the state that Schmitt adovcates. And it began with the crisis of morality of the Liberal party. The Conservatives used this as an excuse to manufacture both a moral crisis of governance and a moral politcal response to it as advocated by Schmitt.

These trade relations must be seen in the context of the two rules of Canadian politics. The first rule is "Don’t be careless of the relationship with the United States, because Canadians do care about it". The second rule is the converse, namely "Don’t get too close to the United States". While there are historical and current reasons for the second rule, the need to attend to the national interest obliges Canadian leaders to practise a mature approach to insisting on Canadian sovereignty by pursuing our national goals in a spirit of enlightened self-interest.
