Since 1985 the end of the Cold War, combined with tremendous growth in world trade and international investment, has changed the nature of world politics. This course examines the impact of this "globalization" on economics, politics and culture, focusing on the challenges it creates for an increasingly interconnected yet diverse world. Emphasis is placed on studying the international political economy.Prerequisite(s): POS 136S or ECO 110S or permission of instructor. (Pass/Fail option) Every two years. CCP

UG 431 Politics of Global Migration 3 cr. Offered spring. Prereq., junior standing or consent of instr. Exploration of the elective and forced migration of peoples within countries and across national boundaries. Geographical coverage includes Asia, North and Central America, Africa, and Europe. Attention to policy and gender issues surrounding economic and political migration.

Garth Stevenson is a Professor of Political Science and former Chairman of the Department at Brock University, specializing in Canadian government and politics. Born in Montreal, he earned a B.A. and M.A. from McGill, a certificat from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques, and a Ph.D. from Princeton. He has held full-time appointments at Carleton University and the University of Alberta and has ... taught at British Columbia, York and Duke Universities. He has twice been a visiting professor at the Australian National University. His most recent book is Parallel Paths: The Development of Nationalism in Ireland and Quebec, published in 2006. His other books include Unfulfilled Union, The Politics of Canada's Airlines, Ex Uno Plures: Federal-Provincial Relations in Canada 1867-1896, and Community Besieged: The Anglophone Minority and the Politics of Quebec.

The Department of Political Science offers a B.A. degree as well as minors in law and society, environmental politics and political science. Graduate-level courses in political science are available through the northern studies concentration in global environmental policy. Doctoral study in political science is available through the interdisciplinary studies program of the Graduate School.

This course explores the development of Italian politics from the renaissance to the present, with an emphasis on Italian contributions to political theory, as well as regional variations in Italy's political evolution. This is a travel course which includes an educational trip to Italy, and explores the interplay between culture and politics. Prerequisite(s): Permission of instructor.
