Politics: People
built 123 days ago
Aristotle Politics is the process by which groups of people make decisions. Most commonly it is generalized as "who gets what, when, why, and how." Although the term is generally applied to behavior within civil governments, politics is observed in all human group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions.
In politics, passion can triumph over logic and numbers. I know this notion is anathema to many of the mathematically inclined in this audience, but just look how well patient groups over the last 25 years have raised awareness and funding -- and exert a powerful impact on the politics of science. People and families affected by rare diseases joined together in the late 1970s and early 1980s to push for new incentives to develop orphan drugs. In the 1980s, the HIV/AIDS activists took to the streets in their battle for more funding and faster approval of new drugs. The result? Billions in research dollars and new rules allowing fast-track development and approvals for drugs treating life-threatening diseases.

This week, a new site was formed with the idea of getting the word out to people interested in progressive - or the left side - of politics. Visitors to LeftyBlogs.com can find a regularly indexed list (about every ten minutes) of posts from blogs "registered" as being progressive, even down to the state-by-state level. Obviously, meta-like websites such as this have had major success as they garner the attention of people who realize that the information glut on blogs is out of control - will it work for political blogs?
terror-logo-02.jpg The Economist is a weekly magazine that focuses on world news, business, and politics. The magazine, based in London, is dense with information and can be tough to wade through. The publishers target an upper-class demographic, and it shows in their ads for the magazine. A recent ad had a tag line which read, “It’s lonely at the top, but at least there’s something to read.” The Economist is the sort of magazine pretentious people like to be seen reading.

In 1651, Thomas Hobbes wrote Leviathan, a book about politics. Hobbes wrote that people living in groups often give up some of their rights in exchange for some protections from a government.
