The M.A. program in Political Science prepares you for public service and business careers and/or further study in Political Science, Public Policy or law. You can choose to enroll in a traditional masters program or apply to the Community Fellows program. You are encouraged to take the traditional track if you are interested in continuing their graduate training beyond the master’s level, teaching in community college or high school, or working in a business setting in which a knowledge of the political process is necessary. If you are interested in careers in state or local public service or non-profit work, you may be best suited for the Community Fellows program, in which the student works for 15 hours/week for a local agency on a project related to community (re)development. Particular emphasis in both tracks is placed on close faculty-student interaction both in classes and hands-on projects with local or regional partners.

The Political Science major provides students with an understanding of the political process in the United States by emphasizing constitutional principles, the interrelationship of national, state, and local governments, while ... examining other political systems from a comparative perspective. The role of the individual in relation to the exercise of political power is examined with special attention to the role of coalition building. Thus, students become aware of how to analyze and evaluate the ways in which individuals may make government more meaningful to themselves and to the masses of people comprising the bulk of the world's societies.
