Founded in 1903, the American Political Science Association is the leading professional organization for the study of political science and serves more than 15,000 members in over 80 countries. With a range of programs and services for individuals, departments and institutions, APSA brings together political scientists from all fields of inquiry, regions, and occupational endeavors within and outside academe in order to expand awareness and understanding of politics.

The Department of Political Science (formerly Government and International Studies) is a large and diverse academic community. The Department of Political Science offers a full complement of undergraduate courses designed for midshipmen to learn how to study governments, public policies, political processes and behaviors. Midshipmen select from one of three concentrations, International Relations, Comparative Politics and American Government and Law. The department ... offers an Honors' track. These concentrations expose midshipmen to the discipline's various subfields which include regional studies (Asia, Latin America, Middle East, Africa and Europe), political theory, law, political institutions and behavior. Required courses include American Government, International Relations or Comparative Politics and Research Methods.

The Department of Political Science offers both an undergraduate and a graduate program of study in political science designed to help students develop knowledge, analytical skills, and critical insights into the nature of politics, political problems, and political systems. The goal is to prepare students for active engagement in political life, whether as informed citizens or in a wide range of possible careers.

In keeping with the college mission, the History and Political Science department is dedicated to providing students with a broad range of opportunities and experiences in general-education and discipline-specific courses in economics, geography, history and political science. Classes are taught in ways that foster critical thinking and analysis of complex issues and materials through lecture, reading, class discussion, and the development of written- and oral-presentation skills. The History and Political Science department strives to provide a reflective, multicultural, and international perspective.

The Department of Political Science offers instruction and research in the art and science of politics. Work within the department is organized around six basic fields: American government and politics, comparative politics, public policy, political philosophy, empirical theory and methodology, and international relations. Three major current research interests cut across these areas and concentrate teaching and research efforts in the areas of American government, comparative politics, and international relations. Four centers of research activity are housed within the department: the Center for the Study of American Politics, the Center for Comparative Politics, the Center for International Relations, and the Center for Public Policy Research.
