Political science, broadly conceived, is the study of governments and other political actors, including their origins and foundations, interactions with groups and individuals, and interactions with nations. Within this larger framework political scientists study power, authority, conflict, economic relationships, culture, laws, policy, values, ethics, justice, equality, rights, legitimacy, and representation, to list only a few. Using these and other concepts, they analyze the political impacts of social issues such as war, peace, poverty, crime, education, the environment, race, gender, and globalization. Modes of inquiry are highly interdisciplinary.

Mr. Zinn holds a Juris Doctorate from the George Washington University National Law Center and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Vermont. Prior to joining TiVo, Mr. Zinn was Senior Counsel, Broadband Law and Policy for MediaOne Group Inc. in Denver, Colorado. In this role he developed strategies and advocacy positions on video and high-speed data issues, including privacy and negotiated carriage deals with television programmers. Prior to that, Mr. Zinn was Corporate Counsel for Continental Cablevision in Los Angeles, California. Before moving west, Mr. Zinn worked for the law firm of Cole, Raywid & Braverman in Washington, D.C. representing communications clients before federal, state, and local government agencies.

Political science is important because politics is important. During the 20th century, tens of millions of people were murdered by regimes devoted to particular political ideologies. All peoples’ lives are affected in many ways by what governments do or choose not to do, and by the power structures that exist in society.
