Political Parties: Elections
built 183 days ago
Political parties were re-introduced to American society after the so-called "Corrupt Bargain" that landed John Quincy Adams in the White House after the election of 1824. Voters, angry at signs that Adams was "given" the Presidency by Henry Clay (who as Speaker of the House had enormous influence over the deadlocked election that landed in the House of Representative's lap to be decided). Andrew Jackson, a popular general turned populist candidate, was incensed that Henry Clay and the elitist Adams could steal the election from the people (and, more importantly, him). He and his supporters vowed that they would overturn the election in 1828 and began one of the worst smear campaigns in American history. Adam's supporters, who dubbed themselves the National Republicans, viciously retaliated at Jackson's accusations of a "corrupt bargain" with false charges of adultery.

Political parties in particular face enormous challenges and lack credibility in the eyes of a vast majority of the Andean population. Instead of the political agenda being developed by (elected) political actors, the media seem to have taken up the role of defining socio-political priorities. With, in addition, only a minority of people voting for political parties during elections, the strengthening of these institutions becomes all the more important in order to maintain (or restore) a viable and sustainable democracy within the Andean region.

In order to avoid factions, the Constitution grants political parties no role in selecting a president. Ironically, political factions sprang up right away to support the Constitution and to oppose it. By the presidental election of 1796, political parties were firmly in place in America. The Federalists followed Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. The Democratic-Republicans (... called the Jeffersonians) followed Thomas Jefferson and James Madison -- the very James Madison who had earlier warned against factions.

Candidates aren't the only ones raising record amounts of cash -- the political parties collect hundreds of millions of dollars each election cycle. The parties may only raise "hard money," which is given by individuals and political action committees and is subject to federal contribution limits. Until November 2002, the parties ... could raise unlimited "soft money" from corporations, labor unions and wealthy individuals.

Like any democracy, members of various political parties reflect the diversity of the cultures in which they arise. Some are small and built around a set of political beliefs. Others are organized around economic interests, or shared history. Still others are loose alliances of different citizens who may only come together at election time.
According to Lembergs’ forecasts, right before the elections Soros’ followers will certainly try to get into election lists of all political parties. As REGNUM reported, Latvian organizations sponsored by Soros Foundation have been lately harshly criticized by mass-media controlled by a group of enterprises from Ventspils.
