Pokemon Stadium 2 is defiantly [N]ot just a stadium! In fact, that's only a small bit of the many things you can do in Pokemon Stadium 2. There are 6 start modes to this game. They are the controller screen, Options, Mystery Gift, Battle now, Event battle, and White City. White City includes 8 more modes: Prof. oak's lab, Gym leader castle, Mini-game area, Earl's Pokemon Academy, Gameboy Tower, Free battle, your 3-D room in New Bark town in either the Gold or Silver versions (if you have them), or of coarse, the Pokemon Stadium.

"Pokemon Stadium 2" is a solidly crafted game, too. Of course, the simple Pokemon gameplay mechanics don't push the controls at all, but the mini-games use every joystick switch and controller button available -- and "Stadium" responds exactly like a star should. Nintendo didn't just rest on the earlier "Pokemon Stadium"'s graphical laurels, either. The Pokemon images look a little sharper, and, while movement during combat remains minimal, the special-move animations have much more flair than before. "Stadium"'s sounds... aren't going set your soul on fire. The minimal Pokemon vocals and special move noises are kinda cool, but there's just not much audio to go around.

The Pokemon wagon keeps rolling with this third Japanese Pokemon Stadium title -- which served as the basis for the US edition of Pokemon Stadium 2. The game offers Pokemaniacs everywhere a chance to duel with the monsters they've been so carefully preening in the Game Boy Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal games. Using the Transfer Pak to great effect, Stadium allows users to upload Pokemon from their Game Boy cartridges and battle them in several scenarios. There are literally thousands of battles to be had in Stadium. Where Stadium had three Stadium Cups, this new edition has four, and two of those are separated into four eight-trainer battles each. The mini-games are back, as is the ability to play your Game Boy carts onscreen at Game Boy Tower.

Probably the biggest problem with Pokemon Stadium 2 is its longevity. The entire game is based around battles. There is no adventure or quest to go on like in the Game Boy games. There isn�t a story to follow, items to collect, or secrets to find. In a way this game is more of an add-on to the existing Game Boy games. The real meat and potatoes of the game lie within those very Game Boy games.

As you would expect, the graphics in Stadium 2 are very utilitarian. Since it is primarily a turn-based fighting game, the only graphics in the game are the scads of pocket monsters that battle in many arenas. While it nice to see your favorite Game Boy Pokemon in 3D when the original Stadium came out, this is more of the same. Sure, the new Dark and Steel Types are getting a debut treatment, but beyond that, the characters are pretty much rehashed from the original. That isn't necessary bad, as most people aren't going to buy this game based on graphics, anyway. That said, the graphics do exactly what they need to do--present the charming monsters with all of their foibles in a three dimensional environment.

The biggest problem with Pokemon Stadium 2 is that if you don't have the Gameboy Pokemon games you're in trouble. A lot of stuff doesn't work without the Gameboy games plugged into your N64 Transfer Pack. You can't catch your own Pokemon or train them, you only have the rental Pokemon. If you want to win you're gonna need your own trained Pokemon.
