    The Bad Plus is a power trio with a difference. They observe jazz convention with an acoustic piano, standup bass, and drum lineup, but they are often called "the loudest piano trio ever." But there’s more than bruising volume at work here, witness their subtle re-tooling of Aphex Twins’ "Flim". Always musical, they bring unprecedented energy to a mix of originals and rock material (Nirvana, Blondie, Black Sabbath).     Though the band was officially formed in 2000, the members of The Bad Plus have been playing together off and on for 15 years. Their pianist, Ethan Iverson is the most jazz oriented member of the group. He is a versatile jazz pianist with some definite chops. The influence of European classical music ... marks his playing. He admittedly does not have much interest in rock; that influence comes from the drummer, David King. King brings a rock attitude to the group, provides a swinging pulse on the more post-bop oriented material, and is also comfortable dabbling in moments of avant-garde free playing.

"Anthem For The Earnest" really drove home the all-things-progressive musical attitude - Iverson led the rock-beat driven tune with one hand in pop, the other in jazz.

    As for all the controversy, The Bad Plus deserves all of the swipes it has received. In the last year, they have been repeatedly celebrated by Rolling Stone and Billboard. They were even profiled on VH1. No other group in jazz receives that kind of treatment. When writing about them, Esquire magazine’s Andy Langer asks, “Can one album single-handedly make jazz relevant again?” (He then proceeds to belittle jazz as a whole, while praising the Bad Plus for being really accessible.) The Bad Plus are not leaders in the jazz field. There are a ton of groups struggling on the New York scene who deserve the kind of support that these guys are getting.
