For now, at least, the Indian version of Playboy would have just a handful of competitors. Man's World is a local lad's magazine with lots of advice and little titillation. Maxim, a British publication of the same genre, recently announced plans for an Indian edition.

"The bunny is back," said Playboy Magazine founder Hugh Hefner, who opened the original Playboy Club in Chicago in 1960. During the '60s and '70s, dozens of clubs had cropped up all over the world from New York to London and Manila. Top comedy and musical acts performed at and frequented the clubs, which were open to members who held an exclusive key.

The January 2004 "Collector's Edition" anniversary issue is a celebration of Hefner, the founder of the magazine and Playboy Enterprises, Inc., a multi-media company now headed by Hefner's daughter Christie Hefner. By looking through the issue's annotated pictorial history, the photos of Hefner partying down through the ages, the articles (and yes, the ads), readers can track his evolution from sweater-wearing entrepreneur to bathrobe-wearing writer defending personal liberties to permanently pajamaed caricature of the U.S. playboy reclining in his boudoir. In many shots, the aging Hefner is surrounded by fetching young women, including his current half-dozen underdressed girlfriends, all young enough to be his granddaughters.

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) has published a Braille edition of Playboy since 1970.[14] The Braille version includes all the written words in the non-Braille magazine, but no pictorial representations. Congress cut off funding for the Braille magazine translation in 1985, but U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Hogan reversed the decision on First Amendment grounds.[15]
