In 1983, following the formation of their new band, Platinum Blonde recorded a 7-song demo tape in a friend's living room and sent it to English producer David Tickle who expressed immediate interest in the project. The next week they met at Metalworks studios just outside of Toronto to begin recording and within three weeks produced a 6-song EP of New Wave rock. CBS Records Canada then picked up the EP and the first single "Doesn't Really Matter" was released to Canadian radio in the fall of 1983. It became the fastest selling debut by a Canadian artist in the label's history at the time, peaking at #39 on the Canadian album charts.

Platinum Blonde Standing in the Dark Platinum Blonde was formed in Toronto, Canada in 1982 between the end of the disco boom and the beginnings of glammy hard rock. New wave was in its commercial glory and bands like the Police, Duran Duran and Billy Idol were combining fashion and sound to cash in on the new art form of music video. Vocalist Mark Holmes, guitarist Sergio Galli, bassist Kenny MacLean and percussionist Chris Steffer were Canada's answer to those bands.
Barbie is the platinum blonde in power at Mattel, the #1 toy maker in the world. Its products include Barbie dolls, Fisher-Price toys, Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, American Girl dolls and books, and various Sesame Street, Barney, Ferrari, and other licensed items. Mattel ... produces action figures and toys based on Walt Disney movies and the Harry Potter children's books. To satisfy techie kids, Mattel has accessorized Barbie with interactive games, software, and now a line of Barbie MP3 players. The company has even licensed the Barbie name for eyewear. Mattel is trying to reduce its reliance on its biggest customers -- Wal-Mart, Toys "R" Us, and Target -- through its own catalog and Internet sales.

Platinum Blonde Jean Harlow was becoming quite popular while Platinum Blonde was in production. The film started out as Gallagher, from the Robert Riskin treatment of the story, became Bird in a Gilded Cage, and then finally Platinum Blonde, squarly banking on Harlow's fame. She had made Public Enemy and Hell's Angels, two financially successful films that created the "blonde bombshell" persona that characterized much of her early thirties work. Despite her central role in the film marketing, the story itself belongs to Robert Williams, the 33 year old actor playing Stew Smith. Williams died shortly after the films premier from appendicitis. His comic turn as the wise-cracking reporter who finds himself hostage to the pretensions of a wealthy society he had previously mocked is the prototypical "Capra" hero, the delimma being repeated in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and in some degree in Meet John Doe and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

Ironically, the rich come off a bit better in Platinum Blonde than in some later screwball comedies. Though the viewer is meant to identify with Stew’s working-class values, Ann can be surprisingly sympathetic and decent, e.g., loyally siding with her husband against her parents. Unfortunately, the class divide is finally too great, with unspoken expectations proving an impediment to the marriage, while Stew’s supportive gal-pal reporter friend Gallagher (Loretta Young) waits patiently in the wings.
