Divergent - Plates move away from one another, creating a tensional environment. Characterized by shallow-focus earthquakes and volcanism. Release of pressure causes partial melting of mantle peridotite and produces basaltic magma. Magma rises to surface and forms new oceanic crust. Occur in oceanic crust (oceanic ridges) and in continental crust (rift valleys). Continental rift valleys may eventually flood to form a new ocean basin.

PLATES principal investigators are Dr. Lawrence Lawver and Dr. Ian Dalziel. Dr. Lawver's research areas include the tectonics of the Arctic/Antarctic polar regions. Dr. Lawver supervises the work done by PLATES students on the tectonic evolution of East and Southeast Asia. Dr. Dalziel focusses on PreCambrian tectonics as well as the tectonics of Antarctica. Every LX 470 Limited Edition will receive Black Onyx exterior and color-coded scuff plates. Exterior features will include 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a Liquid Graphite finish, and chrome door handles, beltline accent and exhaust tip. Finally, chrome Limited Edition exterior badges will be displayed on the front driver and passenger doors.

The Air 65 and Mechanical 61 suspensions share common base plates to facilitate assembly and servicing. Both have low natural frequencies and are fine tuned to significantly reduce harmful vibrations that negatively affect drivers of construction equipment. These wide suspensions improve stability and have large operator weight ranges, in the case of the AIR 65 version from 50 to 200kg (110 to 440lbs).
