In 2006, license offices issued 20,625 replacement plates or tabs statewide that were identified as stolen. Of those replacements, approximately 1,100 were accompanied by a police report. The rest were identified as stolen but did not have an accompanying police report so the vehicle owners paid an $8.50 replacement fee. Under the new law, as long as vehicle owners have a notarized affidavit, they would not have to pay the replacement fee for the new tabs.

The vehicle is outfitted with USO vanity license plates and was autographed by more than 50 national political and business leaders in pre- auction displays. They include Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and members of Congress from Michigan and Ohio, including Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin; and Reps. Joe Knollenberg, John Dingell, John Conyers and Mike Rogers. Signers from Ohio include Gov. Robert Taft and U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur.

* Vanity plates are available at an additional charge from any licensed tag agency. If you already have an NSU plate, the free replacement program does not apply. You can obtain a new plate when you renew your registration at your local tax collector’s office. Simply let them know you wish to replace your current specialty license plate with a new specialty license plate. If it is not time in your license plate’s cycle to replace the metal license plate, you will pay a few additional dollars to switch to a specialty license plate. So, the best time to switch is when you would normally have to replace your license plate (every five years).

These plates were issued, upon request, to holders of FCC citizens band radio licenses until 1983. DMV continues to issue replacement plates for current holders upon request. The alpha-numeric series reflects the call letters assigned by the FCC. The letter K is followed by a two or three letter, four number configuration.

Most Nevada license plates are no longer stamped or embossed. They do not have raised lettering. The DMV has transitioned to digitized license plate manufacturing that is more efficient and costs less than older methods.
