Planned Parenthood

This is not surprising, considering that Planned Parenthood was involved in the sham trials that allowed RU-486 to be approved for sale by the Clinton FDA, something that needs to be seriously reconsidered and the drug pulled off the market. Between October 1994 and September 1995, the Des Moines, Iowa, Planned Parenthood clinic participated in these trials. Based on Planned Parenthood’s accounting, news reports said no problems had been experienced in the trials. One Iowa doctor watching the news was in disbelief about what he was reading. This doctor, Mark Louviere, had attended to a woman who had participated in the trials and had suffered serious side effects two weeks later, as a result of taking the abortion pill. When Dr. Louviere arrived in the emergency room, the woman had lost between half and two-thirds of her blood volume, and she was in shock.

The founding of Planned Parenthood is most specifically associated with Margaret Sanger, a birth control and family planning advocate jailed numerous times for breaking New York's Comstock Laws against disseminating birth control information. Sanger had fled to England to avoid arrest at the time the National Birth Control League was founded by her friend, Dennett. She was a socialist and an advocate of the availability of birth control to all women, regardless of race or social class. Sanger ... supported eugenics,[3] a controversial view held by a significant number of intellectuals at the time.[4]
WASHINGTON, D.C. ยท November 19, 2007 / PRNewswire / – "Parents need to know what Planned Parenthood has in store for their children and this report is an excellent starting point," said Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League. "The book 'It's Perfectly Normal' is obscene and offensive to Christians."
Most recently, Planned Parenthood has hired Cecile Richards (daughter of Ann Richards, former governor of Texas) as president of the organization. Her experience is not in health care at all, but in political action. Her previous work was as a union organizer, as the founder of "Texas Freedom Network" (formed to battle pro-life groups in Texas), as director of pro-choice projects for the Turner Foundation, and as founder and president of America Votes, a coalition of 32 of the biggest and richest unions and liberal interest groups in the country.12
Planned Parenthood of the Bluegrass opened in 1936 under the name of the "Birth Control League." At this time, services were provided only to low-income married women. In 1967, the income restriction was removed and services were offered to all women. In 1972, the Kentucky legislature made it legal for minors to get birth control without parental consent. With the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, PPBG began to offer pregnancy testing and options counseling.
Planned Parenthood releases no figures on its abortion income. But a very conservative estimate, using the $372 the Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI -- Planned Parenthood's "special affiliate" for "reproductive health research") says clinics charge for a standard, first-trimester, suction curettage abortion (chemical abortions cost more, as do the second-trimester abortions many Planned Parenthood clinics advertise and perform), suggests that Planned Parenthood, at a minimum, receives approximately $91 million a year for the abortions it performs, or nearly one-third of its total clinic income in FY2004. In fact, the figure may be much, much higher -- clinics do abortions well into the second trimester, with the average cost ranging from $774 when the baby is 16 weeks old to $1,179 for a child of 20 weeks of age. If so, Planned Parenthood's income from abortion could be close to double the $91 million figure. (All abortion procedure costs stated are FY2002 amounts, but applied to FY2004 abortion numbers.) Moreover, according to statistics released by the AGI, abortions have declined in the U.S. every year but one from 1990 to 2000 (the last year for which national statistics were available). This represents an overall decrease of 18% in those 11 years.
