Pixies: Throwing Muses
built 191 days ago
Since reuniting, The Pixies haven't put out a project filled with entirely new material, but the group has released a slew of products, especially under the DVD umbrella. First up was 2004's Pixies (4AD), which complied vintage concert clips, music videos and documentary footage, followed by 2005's Sell Out (Rhino), bringing the tour from the same year to home viewing audiences. Then there was early 2006's self-explanatory Acoustic: Live in Newport (Eagle Vision), the predecessor to the same label's brand new Live at the Paradise in Boston as part of its "Club Date Live" series.

While the Pixies were playing a concert with Throwing Muses, they were noticed by producer Gary Smith (Fort Apache Studios). He told the band he "could not sleep until you guys are world famous."[13] The band produced an 18 track demo at Fort Apache soon afterwards, known to fans as "The Purple Tape" because of the tape cover's purple background. The recording was funded by Francis' father at the cost of $1000 and took three days to record.[32] The tape was released exclusively as a demo to interested parties, including Ivo Watts-Russell at 4AD and local promoter Ken Goes, who became the band's manager.[13] Watts-Russell nearly passed on the band, finding them too normal, "too rock 'n' roll", but signed them at the persuasion of his girlfriend.[33][34]

[F]rom the despondency of Come on Pilgrim, through the disfigurement of Doolittle to the inevitability of Trompe de Monde, the Pixies sent a wave that mutilated the face of popular music forever. However, destruction breeds creation, and the pieces have come together as a work of art. The legacy of the Pixies will live on.

In British folklore (specifically from Cornwall and Devon), pixies are diminutive spirit-like humanoids with insectoid wings. They were thought to reside in downs and moors and were known for playing tricks on people. Among their routine tricks were to steal horses and ride them across the moors at night, stealing objects from residences, throwing objects at people, and misleading travelers (“being led by pixies”) or sometimes luring people away to disappear forever. Pixies are said to be repulsed by silver.
