The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the oldest franchises in all of the National League and Major League Baseball. They first started playing baseball in Pittsburgh in 1887 as the Pittsburgh Alleghenies, and they changed their name to the Pirates two years later. The Pirates have won six World Series titles in their long history, in 1903, 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979. The Pirates have had many great players in their history, but probably none more famous than Honus Wagner and Roberto Clemente. Wagner was one of the all-time best middle infielders, but might be best known for having the most valuable baseball card in the world. Roberto Clemente was ... a great player, but he was an outfielder.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a Major League Baseball team which belongs to the Central Division of the National League. The franchise is currently based in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . Team was initially known as “Innocents” till 1891 but it was named “Pirates” , when the franchise signed Lou Bierbauer of Phillies, the fans of the Phillies were unhappy by the way Lou was acquired so the new club was named “Pirates” because the team had a pirated player. Fans of the team had little to cheer about in 2005. The only genuine dazzling star for the Pirates was the unremitting improvement of outfielder Jason Bay (.206 32 101) who played in all 162 games in 2005 for the team. Bay was the heart and soul of the streak he batted .306 with 32 homers and 101 RBI last season. Beyond Bay there was hardly any offense to address for the intact season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had its beginnings as early as 1882, when they were still known as Pittsburgh Alleghenies, when the team joined the American Association. The Pittsburgh ball club failed to gain success in the league, and the franchise decided to switch to the National League in 1887. The Pittsburgh team changed names in 1890 and came to be known as the Innocents. This name would eventually change due to an incident involving the dissolution of the Players League after the 1890 season, and players from the defunct league would be assimilated by exciting teams from the other leagues. Prized second baseman Lou Bierbauer, who used to play for the Philadelphia Athletics prior to joining the Players League, was awarded to Pittsburgh because the A’s failed to reserve Bierbauer. The disgruntled A’s called the Pittsburgh team “Pirates” and the name stuck ever since.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed free-agent 1B Doug Mientkiewicz (Yankees) to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The franchise was dubbed “Pirates” by the Philadelphia Athletics franchise over a dispute of the rights to highly regarded third baseman Lou Bierbauer in 1890. The Pirates became their official name by 1912 and was used as early as the 1903 World Series. The Pittsburgh Pirates dominated the National League from 1901-1903 and appeared in the first ever World Series in 1903.

The Pittsburgh Pirates found themselves near the bottom of the struggling NL Central in 2006 and finished with a losing record of 67-95. Knowing that they must improve for 2007, the Pirates went to the off-season looking to get better in every aspect of the game. Returning to the Pirates this season will be NL batting champion and third baseman Freddy Sanchez, who was one of the team's bright spots in 2006. Pittsburgh ... avoided arbitration with Adam LaRoche and John Grabow by signing them both to one year deals. Add newly acquired righty Tony Armas Jr. to the mix and the Pirates will have the talent in place to turn things around this season. The Pirates know that a trip to the playoffs is not out of the question in the wide open NL Central.
