If one station can be considered as the "starting point" for pirate radio today, that would be the Voice of the Voyager. This station took to the air in early 1978 on 5850 kHz from a location near Minneapolis, Minnesota. This station could be easily heard throughout North America, and it operated on a regularly schedule of late Saturday night. The operators were all SWLs themselves, and soon attracted a wide audience with their parodies of the FCC and SWLing clubs/personalities. They ... played rock music, and broadcasts sounded very much like a group of young people having a party.

The situation in San Marino was brought to a head at the end of September when music industry investigators found pirate copies of "Candle in the Wind 1997" on sale in numerous stores in the tourist area of the town. Following strong representation to the San Marino Authorities by the British Government, the pirate copies were immediately withdrawn from sale throughout the Republic. Gatti's new agreement with the retailers as a result of this will be supervised by the government, and is the first positive step in the fight against piracy in San Marino.

Visitors to the Disneyland attraction should pay particular attention to the pirate captain in the scene where he auctions captured women as brides. The "captain" is a test bed for updates and developments to audio-animatronic technology and many innovations are tried on him first. As a result, his movements are far more lifelike and expressive than virtually any other audio-animatronic in all of Disneyland.

The pirate most associated with buried treasure is probably the 17th-century captain William Kidd. With the authorities in pursuit, Kidd left chests containing 100 pounds of gold and silver plus other precious sundries with a guy named Gardiner, who reputedly interred it on an island he owned off Long Island's eastern end. After Kidd was jailed in Boston in 1699, Governor Bellomont of Massachusetts Colony tracked the booty down, though its recovery was hardly the stuff of legend: he tricked Kidd into admitting Gardiner's involvement, then applied mild pressure to Gardiner, who folded. The haul turned out to be worth the equivalent of $4.2 million today. Kidd was said to have buried more elsewhere, and in later years alleged Kidd maps surfaced on occasion, but at least one was exposed as a fake; anyway none panned out.
