Signed by Universal in 1950, the perky, redheaded Piper Laurie (born Rosetta Jacobs) was a welcome presence in many a musical, situation comedy and costume drama. In later years, she tended to dismiss her ingenue years, noting that she spent most of her time posing for cheesecake layouts. Thanks in great part to her devastating performance as an alcoholic in the 1958 Playhouse 90 TV drama "The Days of Wine and Roses", Laurie completely altered her cuddly image, reinventing herself as a powerful dramatic actress. She earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Paul Newman's neurotic girlfriend in The Hustler (1961), then suddenly retired from acting upon her marriage to movie critic Joseph Morganstern. She made a brilliant return to films with another Oscar-nominated performance, this time as Sissy Spacek's religious fanatic mother in Carrie (1976). Ten years and several topnotch performances later, she was honored with a third Oscar nomination for Children of a Lesser God (1986).

From the filmmakers' perspective, Piper Laurie was the perfect actress to cast in this movie. She was fresh from her costarring role in Carrie (1976), which netted her an Oscar nomination. As this movie ... dealt with paranormal phenomena centered on a troubled teen, casting Laurie as the mother again would provide just the visibility that this smaller movie needed.
Louise Graham (Piper Laurie) flees to Montana after witnessing a mob killing in a deserted New York nightclub, with the vic gunned down as he sits by the piano playing "One for My Baby." The gangster killer is caught but plans to plead self-defense and hires Paul Adams (Vincent Price), a contract killer posing as a commercial photographer, to get the eyewitness. The action picks up at Montana's Glacier National Park, where in a civilian disguise Matt Hallett (Victor Mature) checks in at the fancy resort hotel. It doesn't take much detective work to figure out he's the undercover NYC detective sent by the DA to bring back the eyewitness and not the killer as suggested by the lame script.

Laurie played George Clooney's character's mother on ER. In 1998, Laurie starred in the sci-fi thriller The Faculty. Laurie then made a series of guest appearances on television shows including ones on Matlock, Frasier, State of Mind, Will & Grace, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She returned to the big screen starring in independent films such as Eulogy, and The Dead Girl.
The play deals with ramifications within the family when two of four sisters - played by Estelle Parsons, Elizabeth Franz, Frances Sternhagen, and Piper Laurie - begin questioning their lives and decide to change a few things before it’s too late. That’s a simple enough premise, but all Osborn needed some sixty years ago to craft the most charming play of the current Broadway season.
