Pinworm findings in archaeological material outside the New World have been scarce for unknown reasons, and it is hypothesized that this parasite did not originate in the Americas, but rather arrived via land route through the Beringia. Pinworm is one of the few helminths that could have possibly arrived through this route, as most helminths require a particular soil temperature to progress to the infective stage, a stage pinworms do not require and would not have been possible to attain through migration in the cold northern territories.

People are infected by unknowingly eating microscopic pinworm eggs. The eggs pass into the digestive system and hatch in the small intestine. From the small intestine, pinworm larvae continue their journey to the large intestine, where they live as parasites - their heads attached to the inside wall of the bowel. About 2 to 4 weeks after the pinworm eggs were originally acquired, adult female pinworms begin migrating from the large intestine to the area around the rectum. There they will lay new pinworm eggs, which trigger itching around the rectum. When someone scratches the itchy area, microscopic pinworm eggs are transferred to their fingers.

Doctors usually use the "tape" test to diagnose a suspected pinworm infestation: a piece of transparent tape is applied briefly over the anus and then removed. If a person has pinworms, the worms or their eggs may stick to the tape. The tape then is taken to the doctor's office for examination, because the evidence is visible only under a microscope. The doctor may provide a special adhesive "pinworm paddle" to conduct this test. The tape is applied at home as soon as the person wakes up, because bathing or having a bowel movement can dislodge the eggs. The patient may need to take several tape tests if the first one or two do not show the presence of worms.

Management of tomato pinworm populations depends on culture practices, the use of sex pheromones for adult moth mating disruption, monitoring and insecticide applications where needed. A host-free period is required to reduce tomato pinworm levels after final harvest of the current season’s crop; the longer the host-free period, the greater the reduction in tomato pinworm population. A host-free period is when old tomato plantings have been disked under and other infestation areas such as greenhouse seedlings or alternate hosts (eggplant and nightshade) have not been present to support tomato pinworm populations. All crop residue and culls should be disked to a depth of at least 2 to 4 inches, immediately after harvest is complete, to destroy larval food sources and pupae in the soil. Wherever possible, destroy infested crops before a new tomato crop is planted in adjacent fields. Transplants ... must be checked before planting as field infestations can occur from infested transplants.
