Sleeping Pills was shot in Denver and surrounding suburbs, including Thornton and Littleton (where the notorious Columbine High School massacre took place). Shooting began May of 1999 with completion of principal photography in November of 1999 and completion of second unit filming in February of 2000. Post-production was completed in October of 2003 and the film premiered at The Cairo International Film Festival the same month. The North American premier was December 4, 2003 in Denver. Since then, the film has been shown in limited circulation in theaters around the US.
Nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic medications are the newest class of sleeping pills. They quiet the nervous system, which helps induce sleep. They're metabolized quickly, which helps reduce the risk of side effects the next day. These medications are mainly intended for short-term or intermittent use. They're available by prescription only.

People with insomnia often turn first to sleeping pills for a quick fix to help them fall asleep and stay asleep. Sleep medications may seem to help the problem at first, but they do not cure insomnia and often lose effectiveness over the long term. In addition, sleeping pills have side-effects and can be addictive.

Benzodiazepines are an older class of sleeping pills. They're more likely than newer types to cause drowsiness or headaches the next morning, and they may become habit forming. Benzodiazepines are available by prescription only.

Long-term studies on the effects of sleeping pills don’t show encouraging results. In fact the one major conclusion from all studies is that insomniacs are better off without sleeping pills than they are with them. One study alone that surveyed over 2,000,000 people, found that chronic use of sleeping pills are as deadly as cigarette smoking.
