One of the more creative things about Pikmin is that you ... get to read Olimar’s Diary at this point and this makes the game seem that much more alive. The many touches like these that makes the game come alive. Another example is that Olimar has to keep an eye on the Pikmin because while they are great in number, they aren’t up to certain tasks. While the blue Pikmin can travel over water with ease, the other types of Pikmin will drown when they come in contact with it. Other Pikmin can be quite slow at points and you might need to make them faster so you can complete tasks before the timer runs out. The Pikmin are also easy prey for the large bugs on the world as well and can be eaten quickly if you’re not careful. The good news is that while its inevitable that you’ll have to sacrifice some of the creatures along the way, they’ll leave seeds behind which you use later on to make new ones.

Average reviews for Pikmin were 9.0 and higher. Pikmin received the E3 2001 Game Critics award for best Puzzle/Trivia/Parlor game along with other numerous awards. Miyamoto responded with how the idea of Pikmin came up. He was working in his garden when ideas started to flood in. He wanted to create a game that really shows off the large amount of detail that happens in a garden or undergrowth. His dog named Pik obviously gave the name Pikmin and if you reversed the name Mario in Japanese you get Olimar. Pikmin was on its way to becoming another one of Nintendo’s flagship titles.

As the master of the Pikmin, you have some royal treatment coming your way. Press Down (on the D-Pad) for 4 Pikmin to carry you back to base. You'll see a fireworks display held just for you. Or, if you want, just stand still long enough.

Apart from the main gameplay, Pikmin ... contains a Challenge Mode that is unlocked once all three Pikmin types are found. Each of the five levels in the main game are available for play. The object of challenge mode is to grow the greatest number of Pikmin in one day as is possible. The number of creatures in Challenge Mode is significantly greater than in the main game, and their distribution is changed as well. Although discovering new areas in the main game opens them for Challenge Mode play, Challenge Mode does not affect gameplay in the main story mode in any way. There is still a 100 Pikmin limit.

For the most part, Pikmin 2 is very similar to its 2001 predecessor. The biggest change is the addition of Louie, Captain Olimar's trusty sidekick. At any point during the game, you can swap between Olimar and Louie, which may seem a little gimmicky at first, but it actually allows for much more elaborate puzzle solving. That's because you can coordinate strategies with two groups of Pikmin from different angles, or even work in different areas of your environment simultaneously. If you don't feel like swapping between the two intergalactic explorers, the game ... offers cooperative multiplayer support, so Olimar can be assigned to one player and Louie to another.

Pikmin is quickly becoming a favorite franchise among the Nintendo-owning gamers, and this title is sure to bring even more into the fold. While the game does appear to have a childish slant to it, the game is challenging and deeper than almost anything else in Nintendo?s catalog. If you didn?t like the first, it?s still worth giving the sequel a shot, and those that loved the first will only find more to like.
