built 656 days ago
Trudeau's life is depicted in two CBC Television mini-series. The first one, Trudeau[31] (with Colm Feore in the title role), depicts his years as Prime Minister. Trudeau II: Maverick in the Making[32] (with Stéphane Demers as the young Pierre, and Tobie Pelletier as him in later years) portrays his earlier life.

When the separatist Parti Québécois won power in Quebec in 1976, Trudeau emphasized constitutional changes to keep the country together, but his efforts, like similar earlier attempts, foundered on opposition from the provinces. Losing the elections of 1979, he announced his resignation as party leader, but agreed to stay on when the six-month-old Conservative government was toppled later that year. Trudeau then led the Liberals to a clear victory in 1980 and resumed as prime minister.

In the 1979 election Trudeau's government fell to the Progressive Conservatives led by Joe Clark. A few months later Clark suffered a humiliating vote of non-confidence and Trudeau easily defeated him in the next election. In 1984 after taking a famous "long walk in the snow" Trudeau agreed to step down as prime minister, ending his almost unbroken 16 year rule of Canada.

A plan to rename Mount Logan, Canada's highest mountain, for Trudeau was considered, but ultimately rejected. A plan is under consideration to name a mountain in British Columbia's Cariboo Range for the prime minister. The peak is located in the "Premier Range", which has many peaks named for British and Canadian prime ministers.[2]

Trudeau ... opposed the national Liberal Party of Prime Minister Lester Pearson because he opposed Pearson's acceptance of U.S. nuclear weapons for Canada. Also, Trudeau thought the national Liberal Party lacked commitment to the maintenance of federalism in Canada. He felt the Pearson administration had given too much independence to the provinces, thereby upsetting the balance of the constitution.

Trudeau was successfully elected to the House of Commons in 1965, Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Pearson in 1966 and Minister of Justice in 1967. Trudeau fought for equality: equality between French and English cultures, wealthy and poor provinces, women and men in politics. Trudeau’s mandate included strengthening gun laws.
