Pierre Trudeau: Liberal Party
built 655 days ago
In March 1979, Pierre called a general election for May 22. The Liberals were constantly blamed by the Conservative party for Canada’s economic troubles. The Conservative party won the election with 135 seats with leader Joe Clark. (The Liberals received 115 seats.) Trudeau resigned from politics and the Liberals party on November 11, 1979.
Trudeau initially attracted wide praise for his outspoken manner and his youthful lifestyle. Among some segments of the population his popularity was so strong that it came to be known as “Trudeaumania.” Until his marriage in 1971 to Margaret Sinclair, the daughter of a prominent Vancouver Liberal, his social life ... drew much public attention. He and his wife had three sons; they separated in 1977 and were divorced in 1984.

Trudeau made a late entry into the political arena in his 40s, but quickly rose through the ranks of the Liberal Party. His success was at one stage known as "Trudeau-mania", a term derived from the "beatle-mania" of the 60s. Trudeau, a man of bookish, intellectual inclinations, was generally uncomfortable with his public image, but populist enough to exploit his political charisma in the interests of electoral success.
In the election of 1972, Trudeau's Liberal Party won with a minority government, with the New Democratic Party holding the balance of power. In the election of 1974, Trudeau was re-elected with a majority government. Trudeau's government policy of official bilingualism was one of several issues in both elections.
[T]hat having been done, Trudeau decides to go on a whirlwind tour of Europe, with the idea of easing tensions in the cold war. He doesn't do too badly, even gets nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Fortunately or Unfortunately, the Russian Communist Party leader Yuri Andropov died in the middle of this tour, so what was supposed to be peace talks in Moscow, turned into a funeral.

By 1972 Trudeau's position had weakened, and he managed to cling to power after the general election in October only with the help of the socialist New Democratic Party. He quickly adapted his party to the situation and introduced popular, though expensive, legislation. He admitted that he had been too "rational" in his approach to politics, and sadly he concluded that politics was "ninetenths" emotion.
