Pierre Trudeau: Countries
built 628 days ago
Pierre Trudeau was an internationalist. He looked outward, beyond his own city, province, culture, and country, to the world. Other cultures and peoples fascinated him, and during his life he traveled to practically every corner of the planet. For him mere tolerance among the world's diverse peoples — as between Canada's French and English communities — was not enough. It could not, by itself, create the genuine goodwill that must be the foundation of just relationships. For goodwill to flourish, different peoples must be keenly interested in each other's histories, cultures, and well-being.
Canadians were optimistic and confident coming out of Centennial Year in 1967, and Pierre Trudeau captured the country's imagination. He was swept to power in 1968 in a wave of "Trudeaumania". The country's fascination with the man has never ceased, and as recently as 1999 Canadian Press editors named him Newsmaker of the Century.
A few years later, when Person retired, Trudeau was elected the 15th Prime Minister of Canada, and "Trudeaumania" began. The charisma of the man swept the country. Most of his time in office was spent trying to unite Canada's two cultures. By bringing Canada's constitution from England, where it was originally enacted, to Canada where it belonged, he accomplished the second great act for gays and lesbians.

Trudeau's "achievements" ... included policies noted above such as the National Energy Program and Wage & Price Controls. At the nature of those programs is that the individual's freedom to trade voluntarily is denied. That is the exact opposite of protecting rights. In fact, several countries' constitutions protect voluntary trade between their citizens. Trudeau had no problems consistently abridging these rights.

Somehow Mr. Trudeau floated through it all, sustaining very few important defeats, and entertaining or infuriating most of the country by his antics. From time to time the country tired of him. He narrowly escaped defeat by Conservative leader Robert Stanfield in 1972. He was narrowly defeated by Conservative leader Joe Clark in 1979. And at the end of his political career in 1984 he was nearly universally rejected.
Trudeau again collaborated with Swados in 1984, this time on Rap Master Ronnie, a satirical revue about the Reagan Administration that opened off-Broadway at the Village Gate. Over the next four years the show was continuously updated for numerous productions around the country. A filmed version of Rap Master Ronnie, featuring Jim Morris, the Smothers Brothers, and Carol Kane was broadcast on Cinemax in 1988.
