Pierce Brosnan: James Bond
built 178 days ago
Aware of the danger of being typecast as James Bond, Pierce Brosnan asked EON Productions, when accepting the role, to be allowed to work in other projects between Bond series films. The request was granted, and for every Bond series film, Brosnan appeared in at least two mainstream films, including several he had produced. For a time, rumor was that Brosnan's Bond contract forbade him from wearing a dinner suit in any non-Bond film; that rumor was false. Brosnan played a wide range of roles in-between his Bond film appearances, ranging from a nerdy scientist in Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! to Canadian conservationist Grey Owl in the biopic of the same name.

Almost as soon as his plane from England touched down in America in 1982 (well, within two weeks, anyway), Irish actor Pierce Brosnan landed the show that would launch his career: Remington Steele. The popular detective drama ran through 1986. Right before it was canceled, he was offered the role of James Bond, but due to his Steele contract the part went to Timothy Dalton instead. But Bond came calling again in 1994 and in GoldenEye Brosnan would set his reputation as possibly the best Bond since Sean Connery, making four movies as the debonair spy who loved women along with a host of other well-received films such as The Matador, The Thomas Crown Affair remake and Evelyn.

Pierce Brendan Brosnan was born on May 16, 1953, in Navan, County Meath, Ireland. His father, Thomas Brosnan, left the family when Pierce was at an early age, which left Pierce's mother, Mary "May" Brosnan, to raise her son alone. May left Pierce with his grandparents in Ireland and went to London to train as a nurse. The situation proved painful for the young Pierce, who wasn't reunited with his mother until he was 11 years old. Pierce has said that shortly after arriving in England, he experienced something that would have a major effect on his life. He saw his first motion picture, which ironically turned out to be a James Bond film -- Goldfinger.

Pierce Brendan Brosnan was born on May 16, 1953 in Navan, County Meath, Ireland. He lived there throughout his childhood until he was about 11 years old and moved to London with his family, in 1964. Where, reportedly, he saw his first movie as a child, "Goldfinger," which starred Sean Connery as Bond. He worked around London as a commercial artist/ ill-ustrator and a cab driver. One of his co-workers introduced him to the theatre and acting. Pierce left his job to pursue a career in acting.

Though Irish born, the unfeasibly handsome Pierce Brosnan relocated to London with his family at the age of 11, on the very day, or so he says, that James Bond author Ian Fleming died. One of the first films he saw in London was Goldfinger [1964]. These were the two first incidences of James Bond crossing paths with the young Brosnan - they wouldn't be the last.

After months of speculation, Pierce Brosnan finally admitted that he had been fired from the role of Bond, James Bond. While on an interview to promote his new movie, After the Sunset, Brosnan was quoted as saying "It's over, it's over, it's absolutely over." [read more: discuss] 10.14.04
