Piedmont Hospital is the only metro Atlanta hospital to attain both the Cardiac Care and the Cardiac Surgery Excellence Awards and one of only 108 hospitals in the country to earn the distinction. Overall cardiac care includes performance in numerous cardiovascular services, including care for patients with heart attack, atrial fibrillation, coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG), valve surgery, interventional cardiology, and heart failure. Earlier in the year, Piedmont Hospital was the recipient of HealthGrades 2007 Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety Award(TM), for the second consecutive year. The award ranked Piedmont among the top five percent nationally for patient safety outcomes.

The original name of the city of Piedmont was Danielsville. Two brothers, James E. Daniel and William Daniel, received homestead land grants in 1853. William established a store, which brought other businesses, and soon Danielsville began to grow. While James became a successful farmer, William became the first Justice of the Peace and became know as the Squire Daniel. The city was renamed Piedmont meaning "An area of shallow, rolling hills formed or lying at the foot of a mountain or mountain range." More

This funding will help advance development of Piedmont Pharmaceuticals' pipeline, particularly the U.S. Phase III clinical trials of its unique patented, insecticide-free head lice treatment. Through licensees abroad, this pediculicide rinse is already approved and is the market leader in the United Kingdom and Ireland (under the name Full Marks Solution(R)) and gaining market share in Canada (as RESULTZ(R)). While no timetable has been set, Piedmont Pharmaceuticals anticipates expanding distribution of the product through licensees in the European, Asian and Australasian markets.

The Piedmont region held its first group meeting on December 21, 1976, and its first Paso Fino show four months later in Monroe, North Carolina. This show was a one day event with 35 horses. On May15, 1977, Piedmont held a trail ride for NATRC horsemen in May of 1977 in South Carolina. In 1979 Piedmont joined hands with AHSA, (now USEF) in a 10 class horse show in Oak Ridge, North Carolina. These humble beginnings were the start of a powerful active region, bringing members from the now non-active Atlantic Paso Fino Owners and Breeders Association, which covered the eastern part of the USA.

The Piedmont region is closely associated with the Piedmont blues, a style of blues music that originated there in the late 19th century. Most Piedmont blues musicians came from Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. During the Great Migration, Black Americans migrated to the Piedmont. With the Appalachian Mountains to the west, those who may otherwise have spread into rural areas instead stayed in cities and were ... exposed to a broader mixture of music than those in, for example, the rural Mississippi delta. Thus, Piedmont blues was influenced by many types of music such as ragtime, country, and popular songs -- styles that had comparatively less influence on blues music in other regions.

Piedmont’s Regular Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2008. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Results will be telecast on KCOM-TV and on the city’s web site beginning at 8:00 p.m.
