  1. Starglider -- Game
A timed version of Starglider was used for the Get Mucky segment of UK Saturday morning children's TV show Get Fresh. Two contestants played three-minute sessions on the modified game, the winner being the contest with the highest score.
  2. Splatterhouse -- Games
Splatterhouse is a beat 'em up arcade game that was released by Namco in 1988 only in Japan. It runs on Namco System 1 hardware and was never released in the United States due to its violent nature as well as some questionable enemies such as the fourth stage's boss (an inverted cross). As a result, the game was the first to ever get a parental advisory disclaimer, 4 years before Midway's Mortal Kombat was released.
  3. Xevious -- Games
[I]f you were raised on more modern shooters, with their fancy power-ups and their death metal soundtracks, Xevious is going to seem positively ancient. But its bright graphics and maddeningly repetitive little song were pretty hot 25 years ago, and all of that is duplicated well in this Xbox 360 release. Like the other Namco Xbox Live Arcade releases, there are no new graphics or sound options in Xevious, which is disappointing, as a light facelift would have been interesting to see. There is ... no online playability whatsoever. The only method of comparison is the game's leaderboard. Finally, the game does have 200 achievement points, much like other Xbox Live Arcade releases.
  4. Eb Games
The black friday ads for EB Games/GameStop have hit and they're offering Virtua Tennis 3 on the PS3 and Naruto: Ninja Council 3 on the DS for $20 apiece, and World of Warcraft for $10. The rest of the deals are pretty unspectacular, but thats EB for ya. Oh yeah, select movie titles on Sony's format of the future, UMD, are only $3.99 (Minidisc 2.0 FTW!). [Black Friday on Giz]
  5. Battletoads -- Games
Battletoads is a pretty fun arcade style beat-em-up game. The music was always very cool. The coolest thing about the graphics in Battletoads game, and its number one claim to fame, is the addition of huge body parts at the end of certain combos. The very last hit of almost all of the combos resulted in your fist or foot growing very large and then hitting your enemy with it. This was actually a huge craze at the time. The backgrounds looked good as well.
  6. Gyruss -- Games
Making a strong effort to be noticed in the early 80s, Gyruss is a fine shooter, complete with a classic soundtrack and fun blasting mechanics. Designed by Yoshiki Okamoto who would produce countless classics for Capcom later in his career (including the Street Fighter franchise), his unique design stands the test of time. Sadly, this Xbox Live Arcade edition does not properly represent the game.
  7. Einhander -- Games
The very best thing about Einhander ... is the equipment at your disposal during the game: your ship itself and the array of weapons at your disposal. Your ship is equipped with a single mechanised 'arm' (hence the title of the game) which can grab and mount enemy weapons, allowing you to switch between various items in your arsenal as you wish. This is a far better system than many earlier shooters in which once you had picked up a certain weapon you were effectively stuck with it.. and leads to a certain strategic element as you try to collect and store the right weapon for a particular section or boss.
  8. Videogames -- Games
"Just like paintings, sculptures, plays, films, or symphonies, videogames can both display breathtaking aesthetics and convey powerful messages. Videogames can carry the twin payloads of beauty and purpose as any other artistic medium," writes CNET editor Will Greenwald. Click "PRESS START" on the page and you'll see screenshots of 10 examples, among them Bioshock (featuring "brilliant art deco-inspired level design and fascinating analysis of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged and the Objectivist movement"), Okami, Metal Gear Solid, Eternal Sonata, and Alice. Meanwhile, CNN reports that producers in this very visual artistic medium have "largely ignored … the blind." "With that in mind, a team of researchers at the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab in Massachusetts set out this summer to make a music-based video game that's designed for mainstream players and ... accessible to the blind."
  9. The N -- Games
There are fifty-seven full titles available for N-Gage... only 54 of these saw North American releases. The titles that were released in Europe but not North America are : Flo Boarding, Sega rally and Snakes (as a full retail game on MMC). All but two of these titles (Snakes and Payload) were available on MMC. A selection can now be downloaded via the Nokia Game Shop. These are:
  10. Tekken -- Games
Tekken was the first game in the Tekken series and has been a three-dimensional fighting game from the start. Strategies for fighting are largely two-dimensional, but include the third attribute of side-stepping. This can be used to evade attacks, as well as modifying the character's attack to become different. In some cases, attacks can hit characters who have sidestepped.
