A CWU physics major observes saturated absorption in Rubidium vapor using a tunable diode laser. Physics is the study of the fundamental ways that Nature behaves. Physical laws provide the basis for understanding processes in all the natural sciences, including chemistry, geology, astronomy, and biology. Physics students at CWU pursue the intellectual excitement of investigating natural phenomena, including light, sound, heat, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of matter. In the process, students acquire valuable experience in problem solving, quantitative reasoning, and experimental design, and develop habits of independent study and self improvement essential to success after graduation.

The Physics faculty sponsors a chapter of the National Society of Physics Students, which is affiliated with the American Institute of Physics. The Southwestern chapter has been recognized many times as an outstanding chapter in the nation for its accomplishments and level of activity. This organization has ... received many grants for research projects and for the promotion of physics. Students in the Engineering Physics program should become involved in these activities as early as possible in order to develop professionally and socially. The local student organization is the Physics and Engineering Club. Both local and national memberships are strongly encouraged.

The Department of Physics prides itself on the high quality of its teaching and faculty-student relationships. It is large enough to offer strong, well-rounded programs and small enough to promote good communication and interaction between faculty and students. The Department's diverse research program complements its teaching commitment. Ambitious undergraduate students have many opportunities to participate in research. Undergrads may choose to engage in a senior thesis project in collaboration with the honors college.
A physics professor and student analyze the elastic properties of a tensegrity structure. The CWU chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) received a research award from the Sigma Pi Sigma national physics honors society. The project, "Electronic Realization of Chaotic Systems", was one of only five proposals funded nationwide by this program. Student David Cross and faculty project advisor Dr. Michael Braunstein were the lead authors of the proposal. The research will be conducted by several members of the SPS chapter at CWU (the "physics club"). Professor Sharon Rosell is the faculty advisor for CWU SPS chapter. Photos of students at work on the project are featured on the national SPS web page.

The Martin Fisher School of Physics at Brandeis University offers rigorous training of high quality to the aspiring research physicist in an academically stimulating environment. The limited enrollment and informal atmosphere of the department encourage friendly relations of students among themselves and with members of the faculty, and provide for close personal attention to the individual needs of each student. The research areas range from the very practical to the very theoretical and include some of the most exciting frontiers of knowledge in today's world.
Southwestern Oklahoma State University Students who choose to major in physics have two options. The most commonly chosen is the B.S. in Engineering Physics. This option combines fundamental physics courses with such applied physics courses as: Rigid Body Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Materials Science, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, and Electronics. The B.S. in Engineering Physics is designed to prepare students for direct entry into the job market as an engineer or for entry to graduate work in physics or engineering. The second option is the B.S. Ed. in Natural Science. This program, administered by the School of Behavioral Sciences and Education, is designed to prepare high school science teachers.
