Physics engines have two core components, a collision detection system, and the actual physics simulation component responsible for solving the forces affecting the simulated objects. There are three major paradigms for physics simulation:
From a record field of 173 entries, nominations were led by 2D Boy's physics construction game World of Goo and Invisible Handlebar's music-adapting puzzle racer Audiosurf. Games were adjudicated by a panel made up of the creators of previous IGF honorees Aquaria, Braid, Cloud and N; industry veterans from studios including Foundation 9, Crytek, Electronic Arts, Big Huge Games and Midway; and noted journalists from Newsweek, Games For Windows Magazine, Joystiq, Wired, Kotaku, MTV News, and more.
There are generally two classes of physics engines, real-time and high precision. High precision physics engines (or dynamic simulations) require more processing power to calculate very precise physics and are usually used by scientists and computer animated movies. In video games, or other forms of interactive computing, the physics engine will have to simplify its calculations and lower their accuracy so that they can be performed in time for the game to respond at an appropriate rate for gameplay. This is referred to as real-time physics. Computer games use physics engines to improve realism.
Formerly called natural philosophy, physics is concerned with those aspects of nature which can be understood in a fundamental way in terms of elementary principles and laws. In the course of time, various specialized sciences broke away from physics to form autonomous fields of investigation. In this process physics retained its original aim of understanding the structure of the natural world and explaining natural phenomena.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) recently launched its latest solar physics satellite, dubbed "Solar-B," with Goodrich Corporation's (NYSE: GR) Solar X-ray Telescope (XRT) mirror on board. The satellite's three-year mission is to explore the magnetic fields of the sun, resulting in an improved understanding of the mechanisms that power the solar atmosphere and drive solar eruptions.
