[T]he comparison between Remembrance and Photopia is a fruitful one. Remembrance feels very much like it wants to emulate Photopia, changing Alley to Alex and the dangers of irresponsible driving to the dangers of trench warfare. You might even say that it starts down the trail blazed by Photopia and walks it all the way to its logical conclusion: highest level of tragedy, lowest level of interactivity. However, there are some important differences between the two as well. Foremost among these is the writing. Where Photopia maintained a consistently excellent level of prose, Remembrance is more uneven.
Photopia is a piece of literature by Adam Cadre rendered in the form of interactive fiction, and written in Inform. It is regarded as a pioneer in narrative-driven, rather than puzzle- or challenge-driven, interactive fiction, and is perhaps the most successful example of this genre to date. It won first place in the 1998 Interactive Fiction Competition.
By mid-1956, just before changing the organisation's name to Photopia Ltd, Charles opened a London office at 36, Wardour Street, Piccadilly, enabling his Newcastle company to compete on a level basis with rival distributors operating in the London area. Wardour Street was in the seedy 'Soho' area of London, so eventually, by the mid-1960s, the Wardour Street premises were upgraded, first to Noel Street (still in Soho) but 12months later into a showroom on Regent Street, one of the main shopping streets in the West End of London.
The plot of Photopia is basically linear. No matter what you do will not have an impact of the storyline at all. Everything is well scripted ahead of time and there is only one way to traverse. Adam Cadre, the author, uses “talk to” to provide his readers a very limited number of choices, instead of the more established “ask” and “tell” model with much more topics. In this way, the story is even more controlled by the author.
