The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which began using aerial photographs for mapping in the 1930's, archives photographs from its mapping projects and from those of some other Federal agencies. In addition, many images from such space programs as Landsat, begun in 1972, are held by the USGS. Most satellite scenes can be obtained only in digital form for use in computer-based image processing and geographic information systems, but in some cases are ... available as photographic products. - English -- Studies
With courses ranging from Renaissance Literature to Contemporary Fiction, and with subjects ranging from professional-level writing skills to Photo-Journalism, English is one of the most varied fields within the School of Humanities. There are four main areas of BA study: - Superpower -- Washington Times
Nixon's visit to Moscow in May 1972 resulted in a series of treaties that together represented the peak of achievement of superpower diplomacy. The United States and the Soviet Union initialed their first agreement limiting the growth of their strategic nuclear armaments (SALT I), agreed on precautions to prevent accidents arising from the movements of their naval and air forces, and concluded the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM), which banned for all time the deployment of missiles against nuclear attack. - Digital Printing -- Industry
Epson's commitment to digital imaging extends far beyond delivering the industry's leading printing products. Epson's support of numerous degreed programs, seminars and workshops has helped professionals and advanced amateurs master all aspects of digital printmaking. The award-winning Epson Print Academy alone has trained more than 30,000 photographers and digital printmakers. In addition, the Epson Stylus Pro program was launched six years ago with the involvement of the best in the photographic world of fine art, portraiture, commercial, nature, and photojournalism to provide insight into the needs of the most discerning visual communicators. And, of course, Epson is constantly working to provide new technologies and products that advance digital imaging and has produced some of the world's most renowned images from some of the most recognized and celebrated photographers in the world. - Woodstock -- New York
An interview with Metallica at the Woodstock show confirmed a few things. The band hits the studio to work on the Symphonica tapes for a release this November along with another performance with the SF Symphony in New York. - Cartier -- Europe Bridge
Although Cartier-Bresson gradually began to feel uncomfortable with Lhote's "rule-laden" approach to art, his rigorous theoretical training would later help him to confront and resolve problems of artistic form and composition in photography. In the 1920s, schools of photographic realism were popping up throughout Europe, but each had a different view on the direction photography should take. The photography revolution had begun: "Crush tradition! Photograph things as they are!" - Phil Collins -- Atlantic Records
Including both recent photography and video work, phil collins: assume freedom captures the artist’s curiosity about human behavior and interactions. Born in England, Collins takes temporary residence in areas of the world beset by conflict such as Belfast, Palestine, Serbia, and Iraq, and photographs individuals marked by social circumstances and destinies different from his own. Unlike photojournalism, Collins’s images do not record observations of a place from a distance, but instead reveal the relationships he develops by interacting with other cultures. Social connection is ... the core of the work. The key work in the exhibition is they shoot horses, which alludes to the Depression-era dance marathon from the novel and film, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? For this piece, Collins asked Palestinian teens to participate in a two-day dance marathon. - Charon -- Pluto-Charon
Astronomers announced last week that they used a stellar occultation to measure the size of Charon, Pluto's largest moon, and confirm that the world does not have an atmosphere. Several teams of astronomers in South America observed Charon as it passed in front of a distant star on July 10, 2005, temporarily blocking the light from the star. Analysis of those observations found that the moon has a radius of 606 kilometers, with a margin of error of only eight kilometers. The lightcurve from the occultation ... led researchers to put an upper limit of one microbar on the surface pressure of any atmosphere, consistent with expectations that the moon did not have any substantial atmosphere. The results add additional credence to the hypothesis that the Pluto-Charon system formed through the collision early in the history of the solar system. The results were published in the January 5 issue of the journal Nature. - Margaret Bourke-White -- Fortune Magazine
Margaret Bourke-White was one of the most celebrated photographers of her era. She was an amazing woman who excelled in the then male dominated world of photo-journalism. Picked by Henry Luce to be the first photographer for Fortune Magazine in 1930, she would gain even more fame with her unforgettable image of the Fort Peck Dam that graced the premier issue of Life Magazine. - Margaret Bourke-White -- Cornell University
As a young woman Margaret Bourke-White studied photography as a hobby. In 1927 she graduated from Cornell, having partially supported herself by selling photographs she had taken around the campus. Bourke-White went on to help define the emerging field of photojournalism and developed an impressive body of work. Her life of significant accomplishments included a series of "firsts." She was the first woman photojournalist and first photographer for
