Blending Americana with electronics, Brooklyn, New York band Phonograph had its genesis in Matthew Welsh (vocals, keyboard, guitar) while working with Tony Maimone of Pere Ubu. Studio engineer John Davis (bass, synthesizer) joined Welsh, soon introducing him to Dave Burnett (drums) and Abe Seiferth (guitar). Phil Sterk (pedal steel, keyboard, guitars) completed the lineup in 2005.
Fifteen minutes later, Phonograph is up on stage and ready. Phonograph is Matthew Welsh on guitar and vocals, John Davis on bass and mono synth, Dave Burnett on drums, Abe Seiferth on guitar and Phil Sterk on pedal steel guitar. Unlike most newcomers into the indie rock scene, Phonograph has created a name for themselves pretty quickly. They formed the band in 2005 and released their first album just a little over a month ago -- to much critical giddiness. In fact, magazines such as NYC's L Magazine and Relix were gushing praise even before the album hit the shelves. For the past year, when not recording, they were on tour with none other than Wilco.
