Phonograph: Records

It is a crucial part of the phonograph, as it is the one part of the system that actually contacts the recorded disc and transfers its vibrations to the rest of the system. It is the part which ... suffers the greatest wear. There are two desired qualities in a stylus: first, that it faithfully follows the contours of the recorded groove and transfers the vibration to the system, and second, that it does not damage the recorded disc.

Many true audiophiles love phonograph records. These fans insist that the sound of vinyl is far superior to anything you can get from a CD, an MP3, or a cassette. Phonograph records play the full range of sound, while a CD has to eliminate some of the highs and lows to fit onto the CD medium. The act of picking up the needle and setting it on your chosen track is somehow so satisfying, a ritual that has all but disappeared.

Wilco’s John Sirratt was one of Phonograph’s early champions. He tried to get the band’s album released on his own Broadmoor Records, before financial problems forced Phonograph to look elsewhere. Austin-based Arclight Records has been good to the band, and the town contains one of Phonograph’s major fanbases.

[K]eep in mind that phonograph records need to be lovingly handled. Heat can warp them and a careless scratch can ruin them forever. Most phonograph records come with a paper sleeve inside of the cardboard box or envelope. If you take care to use this sleeve whenever you store the record, you can enhance its life.

Despite such limitations, the phonograph became increasingly popular in the United States, largely as a result of the production of a huge collection of recorded musical pieces by American and European record companies. The companies employed the greatest singers of Europe and the United States, such as the Italian dramatic tenor Enrico Caruso.

The term phonograph means "writing sound", a term coined from Greek roots. Similar related terms gramophone and graphophone mean the same thing. Arguably, any device used to record sound or reproduce recorded sound could be called a type of "phonograph", but in common practice it is usually only used to refer to certain historic technologies of sound recording.
