Phobias
built 676 days ago
Phobias are irrational, intense fears of specific objects or situations. Many people are terrified of heights, insects or snakes. Some are scared of flying, water or blood. Then there are lesser known phobias such as parthenophobia, fear of virgins, and homiliophobia, fear of sermons. In this contest you will depict lesser known phobias by showing ordinary objects or situations as seen in the mind of the person who is scared of them. The scarier the actually harmless object or situation appears in the image, the better.

Phobias and panic disorder are anxiety disorders, which are among the most common of mental health problems. In fact, it is estimated that 1 in 10 people are affected by anxiety disorders. These conditions are medical disorders, but they are often mistaken for weakness or self-indulgence. Because of this common mistake and because of the stigma associated with mental illness, people with anxiety disorders are often misunderstood and neglected, by society and sometimes by health care professionals.

Phobias frequently begin in childhood. Personal trauma and stress can sometimes trigger a phobia in children and adults. As an example, a person who was once trapped in a small room might later become frightened of closed spaces. Genetic factors have ... been associated with phobias. Many people who have phobias have relatives with similar phobias or symptoms such as fears and/or a tendency to avoid certain situations.

Phobias usually first appear in adolescence and adulthood, but can occur in people of all ages. They are slightly more common in women than in men. Specific phobias in children are common and usually disappear over time. Specific phobias in adults generally start suddenly and are more lasting than childhood phobias. Only about 20% of specific phobias in adults go away on their own (without treatment).

Kids who have phobias often start by seeing their doctors. In many cases, the doctor will suggest that the kid visit a psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist. If one of these specialists diagnoses a kid with a phobia, he or she can help.
