More recently, Phillips has been working on quantum phase transitions and strongly correlated electrons. His work is motivated by experimental observations that challenge the standard paradigms of transport and magnetism in low-dimensionsional systems. To this end, he has focused on the experimental observations that 1) non-magnetic disorder suppresses the Kondo effect in thin films, 2) the resistivity on the 'superconducting' side of an insulator-superconductor transition levels at low temperatures rather than dropping to zero, 3) a dilute 2D electron gas exhibits a conducting phase as temperature tends to zero, in violation of the well-accepted theorem of Anderson's, and 4) the normal state of the cuprates appears to be a non-Fermi liquid. With his graduate student Ivar Martin, he showed that the suppression of the Kondo resistivity by non-magnetic scattering arises from an interplay between weak localization and the feedback effect that magnetic scattering has on localization.

Phillips' artist's statement conveys her approach and philosophy to painting: "Painting demands an honesty that makes one paint each stroke with purpose. If the brush stroke is thought about before it is put on canvas, then the painting will be a true representation of the painter. Each artist must paint honest thoughts in each stroke. The great hope is always that a fine painting will result!"

Dr. Phillips states, "Emerging trends are challenging the U.S. paper industry's global leadership in paper and board production. The industry can revitalize itself though better trade policy, marketing, branding, enhanced cost competitiveness, and other strategies." His lecture will focus on the top 10 imperatives that he believes are vital for the industry to successfully compete against other media and other nations.

"Those Texas legislators ought to research what his history is, and they ought to be ashamed of themselves," he said, noting the state's recruitment of both Temple and Phillips. "They're bringing in that whole crew of these ruthless wolves hiding in sheep's clothing."
