By the end of 2004, the Philippines had adopted all the international financial reporting standards (IFRSs) and revised international accounting standards prescribed by the IASB. These standards are now embodied in the Philippine Financial Reporting Standards (PFRS) and Philippine Accounting Standards (PAS). Both the SEC and the BSP agreed to the adoption of the IASB-prescribed standards in 2005, although certain primary regulators--such as the BSP for the banking system--may allow limited exceptions, subject to full disclosure. For example, a BSP circular to implement the Special Purpose Vehicle Act deviates from generally accepted accounting principles by allowing banks to book losses arising from the sale of non-performing assets on a staggered basis. To encourage consolidation, the BSP has ... allowed merging institutions to stagger provisions for bad debts. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and firms that are not publicly listed, that are not debt/securities issuers, that are not engaged in fiduciary activities, or that are not public utilities or essential public service providers are exempt from the new accounting and financial reporting standards, pending issuance by the IASB of standards for SMEs.

In field trials, Bt corn yields were 24 percent higher in Brazil, up to 41 percent higher in the Philippines, and between 9 and 23 percent higher in China. Second-generation biotech corn -- such as the newly approved variety in Canada and the United States that wards off rootworm -- will produce even more gains with $1 billion in annual benefits to the United States alone.

Ferdinand Magellan reached the Philippines and claimed the archipelago for Spain in 1521, but stayed for only a few days. Christianity was established in the Philippines only after the arrival of the succeeding Spanish expeditionary forces (the first led by Legazpi in the 16th century) and the Spanish Jesuits, and in the 17th and 18th centuries by the conquistadores.
