Philip Ii of France: Paris Cathedral
built 500 days ago
In 1214 Otto and King John of England were defeated by the army of King Philip II of France at the Battle of Bouvines and fled to his ancestral lands of Brunswick. Siegfried recrowned Frederick II in Aachen in 1215. In 1220 he ... participated in Frederick's coronation by the Pope in Rome. Siegfried did not take part in the controversy between Frederick II and Pope Gregory IX. He died in Erfurt in 1230 leaving the archbishopric in heavy debt, and was buried in Mainz Cathedral. He was succeeded by his nephew Siegfried III of Eppstein.
Isabella of Hainault was the wife of Philip II of France (reigned 1179-1223). Their marriage took place in 1180. It was a political union - Isabella was only eleven years of age and Philip was fifteen. In 1187 Isabella gave birth to Philip's heir, Louis, and in 1190 she died in childbirth. She was buried in the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris.
Philip inherited from his father the difficult problem of trying to defend the small royal domain centering on Paris and Orléans against the much more extensive holdings of Henry II of England. By inheritance, marriage, and war, Henry had acquired lands extending from Normandy on the English Channel through Maine, Anjou, and Aquitaine to the Pyrenees. Although young Philip faced seemingly hopeless odds, he exploited the jealousy of Henry's sons, and when Henry invested his favored youngest son, John, with all the King's Continental holdings except Normandy, John's older brother Richard became an ally of Philip and fought his aging father. In 1189 Henry was forced to recognize Richard as heir to all his lands and Philip as his feudal lord for his lands in France. Shortly afterward, Henry II died.

With Paris firmly established as France’s new capital, Philip II undertook a major rebuilding program, the likes of which had never been seen. He had all the main thoroughfares paved, built Les Halles (a central market) and continued with the construction of Notre-Dame Cathedral which was begun in 1163 by his father Louis VII.
Born in Paris on Aug. 21, 1165, Philip became the seventh Capetian king of France in 1180, when his father, Louis VII, died. As he grew to manhood, he became distrustful, cynical, and crafty, but physically sickly and tense. He had a practical intelligence but was not particularly interested in study.
